Nominations are sought for Editor in Chief of of the new journal Transactions on Haptics, to be published by IEEE and sponsored by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (through its Technical Committee on Haptics, TCH) jointly with the IEEE Computer Science Society (Task Force on Haptics or TFH). IEEE gave final approval for the journal on June 15, 2007.
Nominations will be accepted until August 7, 2007. We encourage self-nominations as well as nominations of others. Full packages by nominated individuals will be requested following their agreement to be considered.

About the Journal
Transactions on Haptics will address the science, technology and applications associated with information acquisition and object manipulation through touch. Haptic interactions relevant to this journal include all aspects of manual exploration and manipulation by humans, machines and interactions between the two, performed in real, virtual, teleoperated or networked environments.
Research areas of relevance to this publication will include, but not be limited to, the following topics:
- Human haptic and multi-sensory perception and action
- Haptic interactions via passive or active tools and machines
- Devices that sense, enable, or create haptic interactions locally or at a distance
- Haptic rendering and its association with graphic and auditory rendering in virtual reality
- Algorithms, controls, and dynamics of haptic devices, users, and interactions between the two
- Human-machine performance and safety with haptic feedback
- Haptics in the context of human-computer interactions
- Systems and networks using haptic devices and interactions, including multi-modal feedback
- Application of the above, for example in areas such as education, rehabilitation, medicine, computer-aided design, skills training, computer games, driver controls, simulation and visualization
Organizational Structure and EIC Duties
The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) is appointed by and reports to the journal's Management Board, for a three-year term renewable once. An Editor-in-Chief may be nominated from outside the membership of the IEEE; in such a case the Editor-in-Chief will be required to join the IEEE, including at least one of the sponsoring societies, for the duration of his or her appointment.
The EIC will direct the Editorial board, which consists of the EIC and a team of Editors and/or Associate Editors (AEs) nominated by the EIC and confirmed by the Management Board. The Editorial Board will be responsible for the daily operations and management of the Transaction, and shall establish its operating policies and procedures. Specifically, the EIC will have executive responsibility for:
- The quality and timeliness of the journal issues
- Ensuring that contents represent the full scope of the journal
- Assignment of papers to the Editors or Associate Editors
- Assurance of appropriate peer review of submitted manuscripts
- Timely review and publicatoin of accepted manuscripts
- Adherence to page budget
- Establishing the periodical budget, page count, subscription rates etc
- Executing the agreed policies established by the editorial board
- Conforming to the policies of IEEE as provided in the IEEE Publications Services and Products Board (PSPB) Operations Manual
- Minor amendments to the Policies and Procedures of the journal management
T-Haptics will be produced quarterly, with a target of 256 pages in the first full year. Submissions and reviews will be conducted with the support of IEEE's ManuscriptCentral system.
Administrative support: IEEE editorships are volunteer service. In addition to the use of ManscriptCentral services, the sponsoring societies have budgeted for modest central administrative support similar to levels provided for other publications of a similar anticipated size. It is anticipated that this support model would be revised in the event of significant growth beyond this level.
We welcome both self-nominations and nominations of others. Nominees will be contacted to ascertain their willingness to be considered for this role, and positive respondents will be asked to provide an application package (within a 3-week timeframe of being contacted) consisting of:
- Curriculum vitae
- Vision statement
- 2 letters of recommendation, to be sent to the EIC Search Committee
- Letter of support from his/her institution
The EIC Search Committee will review the complete set of applicants and make a recommendation to the sponsoring societies; who will then forward their recommendation to IEEE for final approval.
The Editor in Chief Search Committee
The EIC Search Committee is chaired by Prof. Roberta Klatzky (CMU) and co-chaired by Prof. Karon MacLean (UBC), and includes several other members of the haptics community representing its scientific and geographical breadth. It was formed by the TCH / TFH, which in turn have been given the mandate by their sponsoring IEEE societies to conduct the EIC search.
